Assam gang rape suspect dies after escaping from police custody

Assam gang rape case: One of the three accused in the gang rape of a 14-year-old girl in Dhing, Assam, died on Saturday morning after he allegedly jumped into a pond while handcuffed, while police were reconstructing the scene.

According to them, the main suspect, Tafazul Islam, who was arrested on Friday, fled from the police and jumped into a pond.

14-year-old allegedly raped in Nagaon

Three people are accused of gang-raping a 14-year-old girl in Assam’s Nagaon district on Thursday. She was later found injured and unconscious on the side of the road, near a pond, after locals who saw her informed the police.

Police said she was attacked and raped by the three individuals when she was returning from tutoring in the city’s Dhing area on her bicycle around 8pm.

Police said the suspect was taken to the crime scene around 3:30 a.m. for a crime scene reconstruction.

“The suspect escaped from police custody and jumped into the pond. We immediately launched a search and found his body after about two hours,” police added.

One person was arrested and another was detained while police searched for the third suspect. The progress of the investigation was reviewed by the Director General of Police, GP Singh, on Friday.

Police took Tafazul Islam to the crime scene for investigation, Swapnaneel Deka, superintendent of police, Nagaon district, told ANI. According to him, he had tried to escape from the jail and jumped into a nearby pond. “Our team searched for him with the help of SDRF and recovered his body from the said pond this morning,” he said.
