Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure calls for summit to combat construction mafia

CAPE TOWN – Minister of Works and Infrastructure Dean Macpherson has called for a national summit to tackle the construction mafia.

Recent killings and unrest in KwaZulu-Natal have been linked to the plague. Macpherson says he has received a report from Martin Meyer, Minister of Works and Infrastructure, on how the plague has resurfaced.

According to Macpherson, the report reveals three murders and an attack at the Umkhomazi Water Project.

He has now called for an emergency meeting of all MECs and Public Works Ministers in the security cluster to develop a response.

“This is simply unacceptable. We will never be able to attract additional infrastructure investment and turn the country into a construction site as long as this lawlessness continues.”
