Sicily’s regional government has asked the island’s airports to stop selling souvenirs with images linked to the mafia, Italian news agency ANSA reported, quoted by NOVA.

“Let the sale of souvenirs and trinkets with the theme of ‘mafia’ stop in the shops and commercial establishments of the Sicilian airports,” urged the regional mobility adviser Alessandro Aricho. The official has written to the managements of the operators of the airports of Palermo, Catania, Comiso, Trapani, Lampedusa and Pantelleria.

“Maintaining a dignified image, free from the usual negative stereotypes, is without a doubt a firm line to be followed when tourists and visitors first arrive in Sicily,” he added.
