Cohoctah man trapped under tractor dies

An 84-year-old Livingston County man who was pinned under a tractor has died from his injuries.

On August 15, Livingston County Sheriff’s deputies were called to Steinacker Road in Cohoctah Township after being notified by the man’s wife that she found him under a large tractor when she went outside to check on him around 2 p.m.

According to sheriff’s Detective Lt. Michael Nast, the elderly man was doing maintenance on the tractor, which was left in gear when the starter motor engaged and it spun unexpectedly. The victim, who authorities have not identified, was trapped for an estimated two hours before he was discovered.

He was extricated from the tractor by personnel from the Howell Area Fire Dept. and airlifted to the University of Michigan Hospital in critical condition. The sheriff was assisted at the scene by Livingston County EMS, Michigan Medicine Survival Flight and the Howell Area Fire Dept.

The incident remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau.
