Randy Pitchford has finally distanced himself from his outrageous previous comments after it was confirmed that Borderlands 4 would be coming to Steam

The long awaited Borderlands 4 is expected to release in 2025. While fans are excited about the game, past comments from the Gearbox co-founder have resurfaced, sparking renewed discussion about the ongoing rivalry between Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Borderlands 4 has been confirmed to launch on Steam, a move that contradicted Randy Pitchford’s previous predictions about the Epic Games Store taking over Valve’s platform. That said, the co-founder has come forward once again to address his previous comments, but this time from a different perspective.

In December 2018, Epic Games launched its own store where players could purchase games, similar to what Valve’s Steam had at the time. Borderlands 3 was released in 2019 and was exclusive to the Epic Games Store. This was a big plus, as Steam is a popular place for many people to buy games.

What’s even more interesting is that Randy Pitchford is sticking to his decision to release the game exclusively on the Epic Games store, putting his full trust in the new storefront and moving away from Steam.

In his earlier comments he stated that “Epic’s investment in technology will significantly exceed Valve’s.He also added that Steam is a “die” store in 5-10 years. This is clearly not the case, as Steam is by far the most popular place for most people to buy games in 2024.

Since Borderlands 4 is confirmed for Steam, Randy Pitchford has responded to his past commentsclaiming that Epic Games was not using its advantage properly. He also stated that his long-term hope for Epic Games was “misplaced and/or overly optimistic.” That said, he still expressed hope that the Epic Games Store would flourish and compete with Steam’s monopoly.

Although Randy Pitchford’s comments were not made in bad faith, it goes without saying that the netizens have a lot to say about it. Social media has a mind of its own and, as expected, fans are not going to let him go.

X/Twitter in particular saw a flood of users taking issue with the co-founder, even calling his recent comments about the earlier prediction “to deal with. Many have also defended Steam, but given the company’s massive monopoly when it comes to a game store, it’s hard to argue with that idea.

Carelessly, Borderlands 4 will be released in 2025although the exact date has not yet been announced. The spin-off game Wonderland by Tiny Tina, released in 2022, didn’t really catch on, so the upcoming game is a big gamble for Gearbox software.
