NAIROBI Kenya, Aug 26 – Police have seized 73.6kg of marijuana worth Sh2.2 million on the Migori-Sirare highway.

In a statement, the Criminal Investigation Department said the fugitive suspect was arrested while riding a motorcycle and carrying two bags of drugs.

“Despite their best efforts, the trafficker managed to slip through their fingers and leave the narcotics and the motorcycle at the scene,” a DCI statement said.

In another incident, police seized 350 rolls of bhang weighing 22kg and estimated at Sh660,000 on the Nambale-Busia road.

Suspect George Willis Obua, 20 years old, was arrested during a roadblock by multiple agencies while driving a vehicle KBM 098P Isuzu Pick-Up.

“The Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) made great strides this past weekend by seizing large quantities of narcotics and arresting suspects thanks to well-coordinated efforts by officers across the country,” DCI said.

At a roadblock on the Mai Mahiu-Nairobi road, police officers from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) and the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU) arrested a suspect who was in possession of 19 packages of cannabis.

This happened after driver John Otero Mochoge tried to flee, causing a chaotic chase that left the car stuck in a ditch.

Also acting on a tip-off, detectives in Busia arrested Bertha Anyango Wandera, 29, in possession of a bale of bhang wrapped in white tape, weighing 17.15 kilograms and with an estimated street value of Sh514,500.

Wandera was arrested at Busia main bus station as she boarded a public transport to Nairobi. Her bag was quickly searched.

“The suspects will be brought before the court today. In the meantime, the seized narcotics and vehicles will be held as evidence,” the statement said.

The Criminal Investigation Department has reiterated its continued commitment to combating drug trafficking and calls on the public to stay away from this illegal trade as offenders face the full force of the law.
