Mexicans Say No to Judicial Reform

Protests have been held in cities across Mexico over the proposed legal changes, which are feared could undermine democracy.

Under the plans, all judges in Mexico would be replaced by elected judges. Experts say this would lead to interest groups, including drug cartels, financing the campaigns of people who would do their bidding.

In an unusually critical statement, the U.S. ambassador to Mexico said the reform “poses a grave risk to the functioning of Mexican democracy.” The plan could also “stop North America’s economic integration” since it would likely violate a regional free-trade agreement, The Washington Post’s editorial board wrote.
