Even liberal media can’t ignore border wall issue with Harris campaign ad

Without a detailed platform outlining what she will ultimately do if elected president, Kamala Harris has campaigned on the basis of what she wants American voters to believe she has accomplished.

Harris ran a campaign ad earlier this month touting her record at the border. Upon closer inspection, critics and even some elements of the liberal media noticed something amiss in the 30-second video: President Donald Trump’s border wall.

While the campaign ad suggests Harris is strong on the border, it repeatedly shows the same border wall that Harris has criticized for years and then, like President Joe Biden, stopped when he took office.

The campaign ad’s narrator makes no mention of the tens of millions of illegal immigrants who have entered the country under Harris’ watch. “As a prosecutor in a border state, she took on drug cartels and jailed gang members for smuggling guns and rifles across the border.”

“As vice president, she sponsored the toughest border enforcement law in decades,” the narrator says. “And as president, she’ll hire thousands more border agents and crack down on fentanyl and human trafficking. Fixing the border is hard. So is Kamala Harris.”

Mike Howell, executive director of the Heritage Foundation’s government watchdog Oversight Project, highlighted Trump’s border wall cameos in Friday’s video, tweeting: “What’s that in this ad? Looks like the @realDonaldTrump BORDER WALL to me!”

Peter Hasson, editor of the Washington Free Beacon, noted in response: “Not only does Kamala show the border wall in her campaign ad, she appears to show additions to the border wall from the *Trump* era. The campaign images (left image) match VOA images (right image) which have been identified as Sasabe, Arizona. The CBP website shows the wall in Sasabe was built under Trump.”

ABC News’ Jonathan Karl showed the video to Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders (I) on Sunday and asked, “What do you think of her transformation on this issue?”

Sanders responded diplomatically, dedicating Harris to possible border policy.

“Trump’s border wall is just a stupid use of money.”

Karl, apparently hoping that Sanders would acknowledge the vice president’s radical about-face on the issue, said: “If you look at that ad, and one thing I found striking is if you look — and I think we have the images here — there are at least three points in that ad that show the border wall. Donald Trump’s border wall.”

“Is it now the Democrats’ position that they are in favor of the border wall?” Karl asked.

“You can ask the Harris campaign about that ad,” Sanders said.

Harris’ use of Trump’s achievement to visually imply that it is her own would be less controversial if the Democrat had not spent years of rhetoric and administration campaigning against the wall.

In 2017, Harris wrote, “Trump’s border wall is just a stupid use of money.”

Bloomberg reported that in February 2018, congressional Democrats expressed reluctance to give Trump $25 billion to build a border wall in exchange for illegal aliens deemed “Dreamers” being given a path to citizenship. Harris was one of three Senate Democrats who rejected the deal.

Harris’ spokeswoman suggested at the time: “Every vote she takes in the Senate, she looks at all the evidence, she does her homework and she does what she thinks is the right thing to do. This time was no different.”

Harris made it clear in a statement that the funding “must not be used to implement this administration’s anti-immigration agenda.”

When Harris promoted her book, “The Truths We Hold: An American Journey,” in 2019, she reportedly suggested that the wall was Trump’s “vanity project” and threatened lawsuits if he went ahead with it.

During a meeting with CNN a few weeks later, Harris called the border wall Trump’s “medieval vanity project” and stressed that she “would never vote for a wall under any circumstances.”

Before she was eliminated from the 2020 Democratic presidential primary without a delegate, Harris tweeted: “Trump’s border wall is a complete waste of taxpayer dollars and will not make us safer.”

Shortly after Biden-Harris took office, the administration cut off government funding for the wall. In the months that followed, additional measures were taken to cancel construction contracts.

Harris seems eager to boast that she has kept the border open, especially as polls show that Americans are fed up with illegal immigrants entering the country.

Gallup reported last month that 53 percent of respondents said they support expanding wall construction along the U.S. border. Sixty-three percent said they support allowing the president and the secretary of Homeland Security to deny entry to asylum seekers if the southern border becomes overloaded.

Earlier this year, a Monmouth University poll found that more than 8 in 10 Americans consider illegal immigration to be a very serious (61%) or somewhat serious (23%) problem.

The poll also found that 53% of respondents supported the border wall.

Harris’ campaign ad featuring Trump’s border wall drew attention earlier this month for a different reason: The police officers standing next to her wanted to make it clear that their images were being used without permission and that they were not supporting her.

Blaze News previously reported that Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux and District Attorney Tim Ward expressed outrage over their appearance in the video.

“In light of a recent political ad by Kamala Harris featuring Sheriff Boudreaux and other local law enforcement officials, the Sheriff wants to make it clear that his likeness is being used without his permission and that he is NOT endorsing Harris for President or any other political office,” Sheriff Boudreaux said in a statement.

“Just as Sheriff Boudreaux said, I do not in any way want the use of that photo to be construed as an endorsement of (Harris) either in her candidacy, her current candidacy, or her tenure as Attorney General of the State of California,” Ward said.

Tulare County officials also disputed Harris’ characterization as a “border state prosecutor.”

According to Boudreaux, the truth is that Harris never cared about the cartels and did nothing to stop people from crossing the border illegally.
