Ministry of Public Works calls on state to crack down on construction mafia

DURBAN – The Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructure is calling on the state to take tougher action against the so-called construction mafia.

Five suspected extortionists have been arrested and charged with intimidation and disruption of work at a construction site in Umsunduzi, Pietermaritzburg.

The group is believed to have stormed a bridge construction site and demanded money from contractors.

Minister of Works and Infrastructure Dean Macpherson praised police for the arrests.

“It is vital that they have our support so that they can do their job of securing these construction sites and hold those responsible for these attacks on our construction sites – who are responsible for extortion, violence and murder – to account.”

He added that the state should not treat the suspects with kid gloves.

“We want to ensure that this case remains on the docket and that the accused are not granted bail and that the necessary investigations are carried out. We also want to ensure that a very strong message is sent to those who commit crimes against the state.”

The group are due to appear in Camperdown District Court on Monday.
