If you’re familiar with Luther Allison for his past and ongoing work—ivory-colored tickles for breakthrough singer/Grammy winner Samara Joy, sideman recordings on 88s and drums for such notables as trombonist Michael Dease, clinics and teaching gigs galore, performances at top venues in New York and across the country and beyond—you already know the man is adept at delivering genuine musical messages. Exuding joy in every endeavor and presenting with depth and myriad dimensions, Allison is a rare artist with the facility to do what few can and the good taste to know what to hold in reserve. On Allison’s debut as a leader, the rising star pianist flexes his own compositional and interpretive talents while paying homage to some of his most important influences—Memphis Mafia members Donald Brown, Mulgrew Miller, James Williams, and Harold Mabern. Together with a trio consisting of bassist Boris Kozlov and drummer Zach Adleman, this University of Tennessee alumnus presents a highly accessible program that impresses time and again, artfully connecting him with some important figures from the state where he studied.

Opening with the original title track, Allison gets straight to the heart of the matter. A paean to the Good Shepherd and to the glory of those who helped nurture and develop him, it’s a stirring composition surrounded by soulful reflection and centered with exuberant swing. The first and broadest tribute on the record, it serves as a perfect jumping-off point. The leader’s “Until I See You Again,” a tale of longing written after first meeting the woman who would become his fiancée and then being geographically separated, slides as it fades away.
