Mohanlal-led Malayalam Film Association AMMA resigns

President Mohanlal, along with the 17-member committee of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), has resigned and taken moral responsibility after the explosive report of the Hema committee was made public. The report led to multiple allegations of sexual abuse against members of the governing body.

Response to allegations of sexual harassment

The August 27 resignation came after several actors accused filmmakers, actors and technicians of sexual misconduct following the publication of the Hema Commission report on August 19. AMMA announced that new leadership would be elected soon and that a general assembly would be scheduled within two months.

Committee members who have resigned

The committee members who resigned include prominent actors like Jagadish, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Tovino Thomas, Jayan Cherthala, Baburaj and a few others. AMMA expressed hope that the new leadership will strengthen the association.

Revelations from the Hema Commission report

The Hema Committee report shed light on widespread sexual harassment, casting couch practices, pay disparities, exploitation and lobbying in the Malayalam film industry. The report has led to a series of allegations against senior actors and filmmakers, causing significant disruption in the industry.

Siddique’s resignation amid allegations

Actor Siddique, who was the Secretary General of AMMA, resigned after a female actor accused him of sexual misconduct. In a public statement, Siddique confirmed his decision and cited the allegations as the reason for his resignation. Following the publication of the Hema committee report, several well-known actors including Mohanlal, Mammootty and Fahadh Faasil were criticised for their silence on the issues raised in the report.
