Juicy J claims he makes money from 90% of new songs thanks to samples

Juicy J has been making music since 1987. He is a legend in the game and his work with Three 6 Mafia continues to have an impact on the current wave of artists. There is no ASAP Mob without Three 6, and there are no dozens of Southern acts who grew up with them. Juicy J reflected on his impressive legacy during a Spring Hill interview with Wiz Khalifa. If we are to take the rapper at his word, his impact on music is even more substantial than we thought. Juicy J claimed that he makes money from a whopping 90% of new rap songs.

The whole thing stemmed from a simple question. Wiz Khalifa asked Juicy if he keeps an eye on the new wave of artists. The latter confirmed that he does, but not for the reasons you might expect. Juicy J knows who’s hot and who’s not because he gets tons of sample clearance requests on a daily basis. “I feel like the new trends are the old trends,” he explained. “Everybody’s sampling Three 6 Mafia, so I’m already in.” Juicy J estimated that he gets 5-6 sample clearance requests a day from younger artists.

Juicy J claims to process 5-6 sample requests per day

“On some real sh*t,” he told Wiz Khalifa. “5-6 samples a day. I get paid for pretty much every song. Like 90% of the songs that are out right now.” Juicy J made it clear that he wants younger artists to sample his music and build on his style. “It’s a blessing,” he claimed. “I love it when people sample… I’m just gonna keep doing what I’ve always done.” This isn’t the first time Juicy J has shown love to artists who continue to honor Three 6 Mafia. The rapper took to Twitter in 2023 to express how grateful he was that he was still considered a relevant musical force.

“Peace and love to Three6Mafia,” he wrote. “Great to see our music still going strong like it never left. People all over the world are sampling and remaking the songs we are grateful thank you all.” Juicy J is absolutely right when he notes that his style still sounds fresh today. The rapper just released a new solo album, Raveliet Social Cluband it’s one of his best yet. Juicy pushes his sound into a smoother, jazzier territory, and it led to some definitely standout moments.
