PAINTSVILLE, Ky. — Officers investigating a burglary in Paintsville ultimately arrested a sex offender for failing to comply with registration requirements.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office investigated a burglary at the Perry Vanhoose Apartments last week and identified Michael Marcum, 51, as the suspect.

While talking to him, they discovered he was wanted on a warrant out of Floyd County. They also learned he was a sex offender whose last reported address was a homeless shelter in Lexington, not the apartment in Paintsville where he had been living with a woman.

Marcum was convicted in 2008 of third-degree rape of a 16-year-old victim in Pike County. He was given a suspended sentence in the case, but was required to register as a sex offender for 20 years.

Marcum is now charged with failure to maintain a sex offender registry. If convicted, he could face an additional 1 to 5 years in prison.
