Nearly 50 arrests after 9-month investigation into Gwinnett in connection with Surenos street gang

Nearly 50 people are in custody on drug and gun charges, according to a nine-month investigation by the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office.

In August 2023, the sheriff’s office reported that they had discovered an element of the Surenos criminal street gang, which was involved in trafficking weapons and large quantities of drugs throughout Georgia.

According to the special investigation group, the arrested suspects have ties to the Mexican drug cartels.

During the investigation, authorities seized $311,873.00 in cash, 14 firearms, 194.12 kilograms of methamphetamine, 36.8 kilograms of cocaine, 6.79 kilograms of marijuana, more than 300 fentanyl pills, and multiple vehicles linked to the Surenos gang.

In total, the GCSO arrested 47 people.

Their charges range from drug trafficking, use of telecommunications equipment in connection with drug distribution, illegal possession of weapons, criminal street gang activities and extortion.

“Cases like this clearly demonstrate the DEA’s determination to hold violent drug traffickers accountable,” said Robert J. Murphy, special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Atlanta Division.

The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office reports the investigation is ongoing and more arrests may be made.
