South Korea: Telegram chat rooms used for deepfake sexual exploitation of young women

Media reports have revealed a deepfake crime involving college students and teenagers, in which explicit images were created by superimposing their faces on sexually suggestive photos or videos, and shared in Telegram chat rooms with at least thousands of members. The chat rooms also used “deepvoice” technology to generate fake audio using AI.

On August 27, Reuters reported that it had reached out to Telegram for a statement regarding deepfake sex crimes on the platform, but Telegram did not immediately respond.
