Watch Sonny as General Hospital’s Maurice Benard and Joshua drive

It’s not uncommon for actors to bring home emotional baggage from the characters they play, but for General Hospital Maurice Benard, something totally unexpected happened. While he was fulfilling his fatherly duties with his son Joshua, Benard was a nervous wreck, and it manifested itself in a way that was very similar to the character he plays on the show.

Joshua scares his father by driving

GH star Maurice Benard — who has played mob boss Sonny for more than 30 years — shared a video of him and his son, Joshua Benard, on X, formerly Twitter, in which the young man is driving with his father in the passenger seat. “This is Joshua’s first time…” the elder Benard began, before catching himself and correcting himself by saying, “Well, this isn’t his first time driving, but he just got his license and I’m terrified.”

He interrupted his last word to tell his son to let another driver “go,” though we couldn’t see what the other vehicle was doing. As they pulled over, Benard lost his temper and his GH alter ego Sonny Corinthos came out, angrily yelling, “Come on, man!” (Read more about Sonny’s latest GH breakdown.)

Apparently Sonny Corinthos suffers from road rage attacks

He then yelled, “Hey, what are you doing?!?” and told Joshua that the other driver almost backed into them. When the younger man started asking if he should do something, Benard snapped again, “No, stay here.” In his raspy Sonny voice (when he really means it) he repeated, “Stay here,” and then softly said, “Sonny’s here,” causing us to breathe a sigh of relief that everything was going to be okay now.

Benard then began telling his son where to go and how to make a U-turn, at which point the video ended. One follower hilariously referenced drivers from Massachusetts — who reportedly have a reputation for showing road rage — responding, “Sonny’s here!!! Mr. Bernard are you secretly from Boston? (We love this) And Joshua… you got this. Congrats on your driver’s license❤️.” (Find out how Joshua channels fear through art.)
