The joint security operation arrested 18 underage gangsters in possession of machetes and other dangerous tools in the Gumbo suburb of Juba.

“On August 28, 2024 at 9:00pm, the police unit at Gumbo police station arrested 18 gang members in Gumba Laffa.

“These gangs were in possession of pangas and knives which they used to attack people in some residential areas of Gumba,” police spokesman Colonel John Kassara said on Wednesday.

Colonel Kassara said the suspects are in custody and an investigation is underway to find out more details about the suspects’ criminal activities.

“We are here to inform the public that the members of these gangs have been arrested and the police have filed a case against them. Investigations are still ongoing at the Gumba police station.

The Colonel, however, urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.

He stressed that community cooperation is essential in the fight against crime and that public involvement can significantly assist the police in maintaining law and order.

“We urge the public to cooperate in reporting such groups to the police so that we can take action and arrest them,” he added.

On August 13, 2024, the mayor of Juba ordered the 57 city districts to cooperate with security services and initiate legal proceedings against gangs.

In November 2023, the Inspector General of Police, General Atem Marol, ordered a nationwide crackdown on criminal gangs.
