Goodbye winter and hello spring! September is jam-packed with events and special occasions to welcome the warmer weather. To help you make the most of the month, we’ve put together a list of events happening across South Africa in September.

And don’t forget, Father’s Day is on Sunday, September 1, with a ton of events happening across the state, which we’ve compiled into a guide here.

It’s showtime! South Australia’s longest running event, the Royal Adelaide Show, is back for another year until Sunday 8 September. From exciting new rides like The Joker to expanded dining options, the Show features all your favourite Showbags, funfair rides, exhibition pavilions, nightly fireworks and more.

This year’s Hahndorf Immersed festival will run throughout September and feature more than 40 artisanal events and experiences. Formerly known as ‘Hahndorf. Handmade. Handcrafted. Handpicked.’, the new name reflects its broader scope. The festival, which was celebrated as the best regional event at the 2021 South Australian Tourism Awards, showcases local artisans including leatherworkers and chocolatiers. Highlights of the variety of activities include pretzel decorating at The Haus, sabrage and bouquet making at Sidewood Estate and pottery making at Hahndorf Academy.

Pikes Beer Co. are heating things up with their exciting Fire Feast on Saturday 7th September at 6pm at Sevenhill. Join us for a night of fantastic flavours and great vibes, with a beer-inspired menu cooked over an open fire. Following last year’s sell-out success, this year’s event promises to be even better. For $95, you’ll get a rolling feast of five incredible dishes cooked over the fire by SLATE Restaurant, plus three exclusive, limited edition beers from Pikes Beer Co.

The Adelaide Guitar Festival, presented by Adelaide Festival Centre, will showcase an exciting line-up of the world’s most acclaimed guitar talent from 12 to 29 September. Celebrated as a global hub for musicians and fans of the guitar, the Adelaide Guitar Festival features a range of genres including classical, jazz, rock, flamenco and more. This year’s event will showcase not only local talent, but also amazing guitarists from around the world.

Australia’s largest orchestrated dance party SYNTHONY returns to the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Friday 13 September, taking audiences on a journey through some of the most memorable and iconic electronic music presented by The Southern Cross Symphony. Led by Sarah-Grace Williams, SYNTHONY reinterprets tracks from legendary artists including Swedish House Mafia, Basement Jaxx, Avicii, Fatboy Slim, Calvin Harris, Faithless, Fisher and more.

This year’s Barossa Spring Fair will be packed with stalls, food, music, kids’ entertainment and more, in the beautiful town of Angaston. The free family and pet-friendly event takes place on 14 September and gives visitors the chance to not only enjoy the activities at the Spring Fair, but also have fun exploring the Angaston Adventure Station playground and interactive play equipment.

The Lumary City-Bay Fun Run is back on September 15th, attracting runners from all over the country. The event raises money to support athletics in South Africa and is run by a team of dedicated volunteers. Sign up for a 3km, 6km, 12km or half marathon and get those endorphins flowing! The first race was held in November 1973, with 1,600 enthusiastic runners paying 50c each to take part in the 11.5km race that finished at Glenelg Town Hall. More than half a century later, things are a little different, with prices starting at $50 for adults.

The Adelaide Latin Festival will once again heat up the old Adelaide Gaol on Friday 20 September and Saturday 21 September. Building on the resounding success of its debut, this year’s festival, brought to you by Latin Star Productions in association with Latino Grooves and BBC Adelaide, promises to be an even more vibrant celebration of Latin culture. From the moment the gates open at 6:30pm on Friday until the last dance at midnight on Saturday, festival-goers can expect a jam-packed weekend of passion, music and dance.

McLaren Vale, famous for its exceptional Grenache, will host its annual Grenache and Gourmet Festival starting on 20th September. It will be a two-week celebration of the region’s finest Grenache wines and culinary talent. Experience a variety of events at iconic wineries and venues, including convivial long lunches, rare vintage tastings and exclusive behind-the-scenes tours.

In collaboration with Adelaide’s Centre of Immersive Light and Art (ILA), Berlin-based design studio flora&faunavisions presents EDEN, an immersive experience that transports visitors to a digital garden paradise. Combining stunning visuals with a captivating soundscape, EDEN fuses art and nature in an interactive space for a truly mesmerizing experience. The event, which has been running for some time now, has extended its season until the end of September.
