Mohanlal breaks with calls not to destroy Malayalam industry

Malayalam actor Mohanlal made his first public appearance on August 31, days after he resigned as the chairman of AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists). Speaking on the findings of the Hema Committee Report, which exposed cases of sexual abuse in the Malayalam film industry, Mohanlal urged the public not to focus on AMMA alone or “destroy the industry.”

Call for cooperation during investigations

Mohanlal, who resigned on August 27 citing moral responsibility, stressed that AMMA alone cannot answer all the questions raised in the report. “We welcome the Hema committee report. It was the right decision of the government to release that report… Those responsible will be punished; the investigation is ongoing,” he said.

A collective responsibility for the industry

Addressing the media, Mohanlal acknowledged the hard work of many in the industry and requested that the actions of a few should not tarnish everyone involved. He added that AMMA is fully cooperating with the investigation and that the Malayalam film industry as a whole should be held accountable, not just the association.

Hema Commission report sparks outrage

The Hema Committee report alleging sexual exploitation and harassment of women in the Malayalam film industry has sparked widespread outrage. Several celebrities have come forward sharing their own experiences of harassment and exploitation, increasing pressure on the industry to take action.

Mass layoffs and leadership changes at AMMA

In response to the controversy, the entire board of AMMA, including Mohanlal, resigned. A statement from the association expressed hope for new leadership that would “renew and strengthen” AMMA. A general meeting is scheduled within two months to select the new board.

Mohanlal’s comments come at a time when the Malayalam film industry is under intense scrutiny and efforts are underway to address the systemic issues highlighted in the report.
