Sexual Harassment in Tollywood: Samantha Asks Telangana Govt to Release Sub-Committee Report

Samantha Ruth Prabhu

Following the Hema committee report, Telugu actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu on Friday, August 30, on behalf of The Voice of Women, a support group for women in the Telugu film industry, demanded that the Telangana government make the sub-committee’s report on sexual harassment public.

In her Instagram stories, applauding the sustained efforts of Women in Cinema Collective, she wrote, “Following the example of the WCC, The Voice of Women, a support group for women in TFI, was formed in 2019. We urge the Telangana government to publish the submitted report of the subcommittee on sexual harassment.”

Samantha noted that the report can help formulate government and industry policies to create a safe working environment for women in the TFI.

The subcommittee was established in 2019 and submitted its report to the then BRS government in 2022.

According to a report by The Print, the sub-committee consisted of over 25 members from industry, the women development and child welfare department, the labour department, the police and SHE teams, a wing of the Telangana police that deals with women’s safety.

Amala Paul calls the report shocking

Meanwhile, Amala Paul spoke to the media in Kochi on Saturday, August 31, expressing her shock and concern over the findings of the Hema Commission report.

“There were some very disturbing and shocking things that emerged from the Hema Commission report. I hope that justice will be done for this,” Amala said.

She also said that the momentum created by the report must be maintained and the issues raised must be addressed.

“There was a powerful group, the WCC, that worked tirelessly to bring this report to the public. They were not alone in this effort; they also had the support of the justice system,” the actress said.

The release of the Justice K Hema Commission report on harassment and abuse in the Malayalam film industry has sparked a storm of protest. Several female actors have come forward with disturbing stories of abuse they faced at the hands of their male counterparts.

The Kerala government formed the Justice Hema Committee after the 2017 actress sexual assault case. The report revealed cases of harassment and exploitation of women in the Malayalam cinema industry.
