They were facing two consecutive box office failures and feared for their future in the industry. “Usually, these kinds of situations spell the end of a film career,” they wrote.

But it was during this challenging time that inspiration struck. Raj recounted how a childhood memory from his hometown of Tirupati, where walls were often marked with the phrase “O Stree, Kal Aana” to ward off an urban legend, sparked the idea for StreetThis led to the concept of gender reversal in the story, where men are the ones afraid to go out at night.

The Origin of Stree

Raj and DK have delved deep into the creation of StreetCombining their love for unique stories with a desire to push genre boundaries, they drew on personal experiences, childhood fears and life in a small town to write a script that was completed in just three weeks. The duo described how a small coffee shop in Andheri West, which later became their temporary office, played a crucial role in the film’s development.

As production began, the filmmakers faced numerous challenges, including assembling a cast and crew willing to take a risk on the unconventional project. Despite these hurdles, Street was shot on a modest budget in the small town of Chanderi, where the team bonded over shared experiences and late-night mafia matches.

A phenomenon against all expectations

Released on August 31, 2018, Street defied expectations and became a cultural phenomenon. Raj and DK attributed the film’s success to their decision to stay true to their roots and make the kind of films they believed in. The success of Street marked the beginning of a new chapter for their production company, D2R Films, which led to projects such as The Family Man, Farzi, Guns & Gulaabs and more.
