Assam police seize 262 grams of heroin in Guwahati, containing 19 soap boxes

GUWAHATI: An early morning anti-narcotics operation on the outskirts of Guwahati has left Assam’s drug cartels in shock. Acting on a tip-off, Jorabat Police conducted a well-coordinated undercover operation on Saturday, resulting in the seizure of 19 soapboxes filled with suspected heroin. The operation culminated in the arrest of a 45-year-old suspect, shedding light on the region’s relentless fight against drug trafficking.

The operation was carried out during the early morning quiet hours based on intelligence reports that a vehicle with registration number AS 25 J 3055 was being used to transport narcotics to Guwahati. Based on this information, the Jorabat police deployed an intercept team. Their vigilance paid off at around 7:30 am. A flag was hoisted and after a thorough search, the following concealed contraband was recovered: 262 grams of suspected heroin, which were cleverly concealed in 19 soap boxes and well hidden in the body of the car.

Police later identified the arrested person as Sultan Ahmed Laskar, a resident of Uttar Mohanpur village in Cachar district, Assam. According to police, Laskar was on his way from Nagaon to Guwahati when his vehicle was intercepted. The seized vehicle has been seized along with the narcotics and further investigation is on to unravel the network behind the smuggling attempt.

This is not an isolated success for the Assam Police. It follows two other major heroin seizures earlier this month. In one case, Karimganj police intercepted a vehicle in Gilaiti Hills and recovered 305 grams of heroin; two persons were also arrested. In another case, Cachar police, acting on specific inputs, seized 330.07 grams of heroin in Sonai, with an estimated market value of as much as Rs 2 crore.

These two successive successes underline the tireless efforts of Assam’s law enforcement agencies to curb the drug menace. A series of arrests reflects the continued vigilance and dedication of the police force in dismantling the drug network that threatens to grip the region. The deeper this investigation into Laskar’s activities progresses, the more hope the authorities have of striking at the heart of the drug trafficking syndicate and delivering another crippling blow to Assam’s drug trade.
