BI arrests over 100 aliens in Cebu’s illegal online gambling hub

More than 100 foreigners were arrested by the Bureau of Immigration (BI) on Saturday at an illegal online gambling hub in Cebu.

BI Intelligence Division Chief Fortunato “Jun” Manahan, Jr. was informed that their operations at a resort in Brgy. Agus in Lapu-lapu City, Cebu were conducted in coordination with the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC), the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Philippine Center on Transnational Crime (PCTC) and the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT). Also on board the operations were personnel from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to assist possible victims of human trafficking.

According to Manahan, the raid was the result of an order from BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco against 13 illegal aliens who, according to police, were overstaying and working without a permit at the said location.

During the raid, hundreds of foreigners were found engaged in illegal online gambling activities at makeshift workstations in the resort.

“We will propose to the authorities to file cases against resort owners for allowing their properties to be used by illegal aliens in their secret operations. This will serve as a warning to those who attempt to start illegal online gambling operations, which have already been banned by the president,” the BI chief said.

Manahan said the arrested foreigners will be subject to a judicial investigation and temporarily detained pending deportation.

Tansingco said resort owners should also be charged for harboring illegal aliens in the area.
