New Swiss liaison officer joins Eurojust

(PRESS RELEASE) THE HAGUE, 2-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Eurojust, an agency of the European Union responsible for judicial cooperation in criminal matters between Member States’ agencies, announces today thatay, Mr Philip Scotland has officially taken up his responsibilities as the new Liaison Prosecutor for Switzerland at Eurojust. Mr Scotland succeeds Mr Sébastien Fetter and brings with him a wealth of experience in cross-border judicial cooperation, having previously served as Deputy Liaison Prosecutor in the Swiss Office within the Agency. His term as the primary representative of the Swiss judiciary at Eurojust is expected to run until May 2026.

Mr Scotland expressed his commitment to the role, noting: “It is an honour to take up this position and I look forward to using my experience to support the Swiss Office at Eurojust. This appointment reflects the importance the Swiss authorities attach to ensuring continuity in the fight against cross-border crime.”

Mr. Schotland’s legal career is marked by his extensive work in serious crime investigations and organised crime cases. Before joining Eurojust in 2022, he was a public prosecutor in the Canton of Basel-City and gained valuable expertise in international judicial cooperation.

Mr. Schotland graduated from the University of Basel with a Master of Laws degree and is no stranger to The Hague. In 2012, he interned at the Swiss Embassy. His professional journey includes positions at a law firm and the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Basel, further strengthening his legal expertise.

Mr. Scotland is fluent in German, French and English and also holds a position as a Major in the Swiss Armed Forces, where he is attached to the Office of the Attorney General of the Armed Forces.

Switzerland is one of twelve non-EU countries that employ a liaison officer at Eurojust under a cooperation agreement, facilitating essential cross-border judicial cooperation with EU Member States.

Other countries with liaison officers at Eurojust include Albania, Georgia, Iceland, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United States.
