Police warn public of new criminal gang hotspots in Kira

The Police have warned the public to be careful in areas such as Kigambo, located in Namugongo, Kumusanyu, Lukadde, Kyaliwajjala and Buwate, which are said to be hotspots for people causing unrest in parts around Kira.

Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke reported that during an operation conducted by the Uganda Peoples Defence Force-UPDF together with the Kira police on August 26, 2024, 63 youths were arrested and charged to court after they were caught smoking opium powder.

“On August 24, 2024, Kira police and the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) conducted operations in Kigambo area of ​​Mbalwa, Nsawo zone, Kumusenyu area of ​​Lukadde Kyaliwajjala and Buwaate. These locations were identified as hideouts for criminals planning illegal activities,” Rusoke said.

During the operation, several suspects were caught smoking opium. A total of 63 people were arrested.

“Of those arrested, 51 were charged with possession of opium and taken to court where they were remanded in custody and 12 were given a warning during the screening process,” he added.

According to the police, other areas to watch are the Katanga and Kasubi slums, Nansana, Kyengera and Katwe. These areas are home to many drug addicts and there is talk of theft from passers-by.
