BHOPAL – Increasing atrocities against women are affecting the peace and progress of the country. The main reason for this curse is the decline in moral values in the name of freedom, said Ms. Mahnaz, the leader (Nazima) of the women’s wing of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind here on Sunday.

She was addressing a press conference at the launch of the month-long nationwide campaign ‘Morality is the basis of freedom’, which aims to raise awareness and tell people what true freedom is and how to link it to morality. “Problems such as lack of moral values in society, objectification of women, sexual exploitation and abuse, prostitution, extramarital affairs, increasing alcohol and drug use, etc. lead to intimidation and exploitation,” she said.

She said that besides the increase in sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), abortions, sexual violence and rape, the breakdown of the family and the prevalence of shamelessness are fast undermining the moral fabric of society.

She said that the JIH Women’s Department is concerned about the various forms of moral evils spreading in the society and therefore has launched a month-long awareness campaign about these evils.

Ms Rafia, the state-level campaign leader, said the aim is to alert the society to the dire consequences of unbridled freedom that unfolds through the degradation of moral values. “Rising crime against women forces us to think whether we are really free and safe. Freedom does not mean being violent, trampling on the rights of others and exploiting women. The aim of this campaign is to give the right direction to women’s safety and change the mindset of the society towards women.

Ms Habiba Malik, in-charge of JIH Women’s Wing in Bhopal, said that God has established this earth on justice and justice should be practiced as long as this country and its system are firmly in place. “Just as God has given air, water and livelihood to all human beings, morality and moral qualities have also been given by God to all human beings,” she said. One of the objectives of this campaign, she said, is that everyone should recognise these moral values in themselves and follow them accordingly. “Justice is the intention of God and doing justice is the act of attaining a high position before God,” she asserted.

Speaking about the nationwide campaign, Ms. Razia Masood, Media Co-in Charge, JIH Madhya Pradesh unit said, “It is undeniable that only by following moral values can one achieve true life and lasting freedom. This campaign is aimed at ensuring the necessary freedom to meet basic needs and attain basic rights for all without discrimination on the basis of caste, community, colour and race, gender, religion and region.”

During the campaign, awareness programmes are being conducted with academics, counsellors, lawyers, religious scholars and community leaders at national, state, district and grassroots levels. Special programmes are being organised in educational institutions to familiarise students and youth with true freedom and moral values. The special programmes with scholars of various faiths are being organised for public discussion on common moral values in every religion and culture, Ms Razia added.
