Colombia 2024: Black Princesses start World Cup campaign with defeat to Austria

Ghana’s Black Princesses lost their first match of the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia to Austria.

The match, which was played on Monday evening, was lost 1-2 by Yussif Basigi’s team despite a late comeback.

Basigi put together a strong line-up for the match against Markus Hackl girls, with his team starting as favourites. However, Austria struck first in the match.

Hannah Frankhauser easily scored the ball after some sloppy defending from the Black Princesses in the 12th minute of the match.

Ghana came into the match having conceded a goal, but their efforts from Stella Nyamekye and Jennifer Owusuaa were saved by the Austrian goalkeeper.

Afi Amenyeku also played an important role in the closing stages of the first half, keeping the score at 0-1 at half-time.

Basigi’s team recovered better after the break and created chances that should have led to an equaliser, but the team failed to capitalise on the opportunities.

Ghana were awarded a penalty in the 70th minute after the ball came out of the hand of Asana Alhassan. Nicole Ojukwu stepped up and converted the penalty.

With 15 minutes to go, the Black Princesses brought Mafia Nyame, Beline Nyarkoh and Mercy Attobrah into the game and Ghana began to dominate.

Despite having a lot of possession, Ghana had to wait until the 93rd minute, when Stella Nyamekye fired a shot past the Austrian goalkeeper to reduce the deficit.

That was all Ghana could do as the match ended in a 1-2 draw, meaning Ghana lost the opening match.

The Black Princesses’ next match is against 2018 champions Japan on Thursday at 22:00 GMT.
