The Gabriela Party list on Tuesday, September 3, “strongly condemned” what it described as the “malicious use of deepfake technology” against P-pop girl group BINI.

This has led to the circulation of AI-generated sexually exploitative photos and videos of the group members on various social media platforms, said legislative adviser Gabriela and former Kabataan party deputy Sarah Elago.

“These horrific forms of online violence against women, shared in Telegram chat groups and on social media, remind us of the pervasive threats that young women face in the digital age and that go unchecked in virtual spaces,” Elago said.

“The rise of mobile applications that can generate hyper-realistic simulations from real photos poses serious threats to privacy and security,” she noted.

“In light of these developments, we stress the urgency of House Resolution (HB) No.1632, aimed at investigating the increasing cases of gender-based violence (GBV) exacerbated by AI (Artificial Intelligence) and other technological developments, especially when existing laws are inadequate to address these modern forms of abuse and exploitation,” Elago stressed.

She said the pro-women group Gabriela “stands in solidarity with BINI and with all those who are victims of such acts”.

“As the only women’s party in Congress, we pledge to advocate for a review and the creation of legislation that will effectively address these technological abuses and ensure justice for all victims of online sexual exploitation and abuse,” Elago said.

BINI is known for their hits “Pantropiko” and “Salamin, salamin”.
