The Most Anticipated Movies of September 2024

Labor Day weekend is over, which means the summer blockbuster season is over. Whether it was a good or bad summer for movies doesn’t matter. (I don’t think so.) That’s in the past. We still have four months of movies to look forward to. So, what movies should you watch in September? Here’s our list:

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice – September 6

Yes, horror movies are released all year round, but Tim Burton’s return to the Beetle juice character feels like the first signs of Halloween coming. You probably have your thoughts on recent Burton films. I don’t blame you. The gossip mill rumors were really surprising for the sequel. If you’re a fan of the original film, you’ll probably like this one.

Personally, I don’t know if I ever needed this film, but if it brings a little bit of classic Burton filmmaking back to the cinema, I’m in. I’m a fan of his early films and I’d love to see that spark of gothic magic again. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a September film I am cautiously optimistic about. I will be there on opening night hoping for the best results. Early press is good. The trailer looks good. I hope my fellow critics are right.

The Front Room – September 6

Brandy. Horror. Kathryn Hunter as a creepy old mom. Chef’s kiss. We don’t see Brandy acting in horror much these days, so this is a real treat. It seems like A24 horror movies never fail. Plus, we didn’t know we were getting more Eggers with Robert Eggers’ brothers (Max and Sam) writing and directing. This movie has so much going for it. Don’t let it fly under your radar.

The murderer’s game – September 13

Hitman movies always make for some fun action. Dave Bautista’s star continues to rise in his post-pro wrestling career with a movie where he, a hitman, hires a bunch of other hitmen when he becomes terminally ill to take him out, but they target his ex-girlfriend, and he ends up being the hitman again. Was that complicated? Maybe a little. Am I going to sit there and be excited to watch a bunch of gunslingers and mayhem? Absolutely. Honestly, The murderer’s game seems like a sleeper film that will do well on streaming, but I think it’s worth seeing on the big screen. Action is always good!

My old ass – September 13

A coming-of-age comedy starring Aubrey Plaza as a 39-year-old version of Maisy Stella who gives advice to her younger self. Plaza has shed the no-nonsense, heartless stereotype she’s carried with her since the Parks and recreation days and has found herself playing both funny and emotionally charming characters, which only adds to the sentimental value this comedy could have. Will this be the best comedy of the year? It’s hard to say, since comedies don’t seem to have a big impact on the box office in recent years. I’d love to see where this movie goes! Like The murderer’s gamethis might be a movie worth seeing in september.

Speak no evil – September 13

James McAvoy plays the perfect villain. He is so likable, but absolutely terrifying as an artist. This is a remake of a 2022 Danish film where two families meet on vacation and visit each other without really knowing the families. Unfortunately for one, the other has been keeping some evil secrets. I think this is the film that most people will see on the weekend of September 13th. If I am honest, I think it is the weakest film in a great series of films that are coming up. The advertisement for Speak no evil has been great for it. It doesn’t hurt that we’re heading into Halloween with many looking for their first big scary movie of the season.

Transformers One – September 20

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve lost interest in Transformers in years. The Michael Bay film series never really got me excited. The best thing that Transformers has ever done, in my opinion, is the ride at Universal Studios Hollywood. But as soon as I heard that Transformers One was animated and Josh Cooley, the man behind Toy Story 4, was involved, my ears perked up. Say what you will about Toy Story 3 being the perfect ending (I agree!), but Josh Cooley did a great job with the task he was given for Toy Story 4. Chris Hemsworth voices Optimus Prime. Brian Tyree Henry voices Megatron. It’s essentially the origin story of their rivalry in the format Transformers was intended to be. Whether you’ve watched the original Transformers, or even Beast Wars, you know that Transformers was the best thing ever done in animation. I hope Transformers One is the beginning of a new direction for the franchise.

Another man – September 20

Two A24 films in one month? As with horror, the indie darling has proven himself with psychological thrillers. Sebastian Stan looks phenomenal as a man whose life begins to take shape on stage. Adam Pearson plays an actor who is about to play Stan, with the latter not looking too happy about it. It’s an interesting premise that provides a bit of comedy, but also some context around physical illness and insecurities surrounding body dysmorphia.

A24 has had a fantastic year of releases and I think this is another film to add to their resume. For Stan, this is the type of film I would love to see him in. He always seemed at his best when playing a character on the brink of disaster. His role as the Mad Hatter on ABC’s Once Upon a Time was a highlight of his early career and this seems like a return to that style of acting for him. Another man is perhaps the film I’m most looking forward to in September.

Wolves – September 20

Remember when Brad Pitt and George Clooney were both huge movie stars who could generate huge box office revenues just by starring in a movie? For some reason, Apple+ thought it would be a good idea to Wolves directly to their streaming service before it hits theaters. I feel like they’re leaving money on the table, but I’m watching it at home anyway. A film about two fixers (mafia lingo for the problem solvers of mafia hits) who are forced to work together reluctantly. It’s the perfect Ocean 11 style action comedy that we have come to expect from these two working together. They have great chemistry. The dialogues and action scenes look perfect.

Again, I’m not sure why it’s not in theaters, but if you have Apple+ you can watch it without spending any extra money. I guess that’s a bonus for those who would rather save a little money and not go to the theater. Unfortunately, it also means that this film won’t be remembered at the end of the month. Mark your calendar, watch it, and recommend it. Don’t let this one go unnoticed.

Never let go – September 27

Halle Berry returns to theaters in a horror film that looks more like a horror film A quiet place than anything this Halloween season. As the matriarch of her family, she protects her 2 children from whatever is lurking outside their home by tying everyone up with a rope in case something comes at them. Of course, the movie has a plethora of things coming at them. Some zombie-like people, some alien-like creatures, but they are all terrifying. I don’t see a lot of people talking about this movie, but I haven’t seen a lot of advertising for it either. I hope it builds up more hype as we get closer to its release. It may have some stiff competition in the horror category come October. This will be a testament to whether Halle Berry can still draw people to the theaters. I think she can!

The wild robot – September 27

Visual, The wild robot is perhaps the best-looking film of the year, both in live action and animation. Edited and directed by Chris Sanders (Lilo and Stitch) the new Dreamworks animated film seems to take a robot into the wilderness while the giant takes care of a little goose. See this film as Wall-E meet The Iron Giant. It has a great voice cast with Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Catherine O’Hara, and Kit Connor. Matt Berry plays a goddamn moose. If you haven’t seen it yet, the trailer will absolutely blow you away. You’ll be hooked. This is a great year for animation. Inside Out 2 has already given us a big hit. The wild robot could easily become another huge box office hit.

Megalopolis – September 27

Is it a complete mess? Is it Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece? Will anyone care? There are so many questions that Megalopolis. The behind the scenes stories were strange, disturbing, and interesting. If you don’t know, Coppola spent $120 million of his own money to write and direct a film that studios wouldn’t release because it was too weird with the requirements that there had to be live actors in the theaters to make the film. Coppola also harassed women on set. He yelled and had conflicts with people on set. It did, however, receive a lot of praise from the Cannes Film Festival, at least from some people. Others had mixed feelings about the film. Now that the film is coming out in theaters, there are so many questions about a film with an all-star cast.

Adam Driver plays Caesar of New Rome. Nathalie Emmanuel plays his love interest Cicero. A Shakespearean tale set in a sci-fi future. This movie could be terrible. I won’t lie to you. It could also be excellent. Whatever the outcome, it will be a spectacle. If only for the drama it has created in Hollywood, it’s worth seeing.

There is so much to look forward to this September. There are surprisingly many different genres in the cinema. I would love to know which films you are going to see in September at X or Instagram.
