The City of Lansing is seeking proposals from private companies and current management to manage the Lansing Center, Groesbeck Golf Course and Jackson Field baseball stadium. The municipal entities, which are managed by the Lansing Entertainment and Public Facilities Authority, had a $2 million deficit last year, according to city figures. That is expected to drop to $1.42 million this fiscal year. “This is a way to see if we are using best practices in the management of all of these facilities,” city spokesman Scott Bean said. The proposals are due Oct. 3, after which the mayor will appoint a panel to review the submissions.

A fire of unknown cause destroyed a 3,000-square-foot hangar at Capital Region International Airport on Sunday, the Lansing Fire Department reported. Airport operations were not affected, according to Nicole Noll-Williams, president and CEO of the Capital Region Airport Authority. No injuries were reported. Diesel fuel, jet fuel and oil were stored in the building, fire officials said. The airport fire chief has hired an environmental consulting firm to address concerns about water discharges that could affect fuel.

MSU started the fall semester with 476 students assigned to rooms that were already full, resulting in an extra person in 2- and 4-person rooms. The Wilson, Akers and Hubbard residence halls are affected. MSU charges first-year students $5,188 for a dorm room for the academic year, unless the room is overbooked. One student in a double room told the Lansing State Journal he paid about $700 less because of his extra roommate.

McLaren Health Care announced Thursday that its technology platforms have been fully restored following an Aug. 5 ransomware attack that disrupted operations at all 13 of its hospitals and operating, infusion and imaging centers, as well as its network of 113,000 healthcare providers in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. The health system is scheduling appointments and rescheduling surgeries. But it will be several weeks before details of medical care provided since the attack are visible in patients’ electronic records, officials said.

U.S. Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin has a 46% lead over Republican Mike Rogers, 42% to 46%, while 12% are still undecided in the race for U.S. Senate in Michigan, according to a Detroit Free Press poll released Friday. The EPIC-MRA poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4%. The same poll, for which EPIC randomly selected 600 voters, showed former President Donald Trump with a 1-point lead over Vice President Kamala Harris in the entire state, 46%-45%.

Former Eaton County Jail guard Ethan Eversman, 24, of Ionia, was indicted on federal charges of sexual exploitation of a minor, two counts of distribution of child pornography and possession of child pornography. He previously faced state charges after being fired on June 24 and subsequently arrested by Michigan State Police. If convicted of the federal charges, Eversman faces up to 30 years in prison.

The FBI continues to make mistakes in investigating reports of child sexual abuse since the Larry Nassar case, according to Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz. He flagged 42 cases over the past three years that appeared to “require immediate attention” but did not receive them, including one case in which a reported victim was still being abused 15 months after the initial report. Multiple FBI officials told auditors they lacked the resources to investigate the cases.

Former President Donald Trump spoke for more than an hour Thursday before a crowd of more than 150 supporters at Alro Steel in Potterville, the closest Trump has been to Lansing so far during his campaign. Trump’s remarks included an announcement that his administration would require the government or insurance companies to pay for in vitro fertilization treatments. He also said that parents of newborns would be able to deduct “major newborn expenses” from their taxes.

Public safety

Michael Poirier, 58, of Holt died of cardiac arrest before he could be transported to a hospital after a car crash that left him with minor injuries Monday near Cedar Street and Eastwood Boulevard. Police have not released details about the number of vehicles involved in the crash or whether there were any other injuries. … Lansing police said a 24-year-old man was in critical condition after he was found with gunshot wounds Friday in the 1100 block of Lathrop Street. No one else was injured and no one has been arrested.
