Kishore urges Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah to form panel on sexual harassment: ‘People in powerful positions…’

Popular Kannada actor Kishore recently spoke about the ongoing controversy surrounding sexual harassment in the film industry. The actor said that he has urged Karnataka Chief Minister Mr. Siddaramaiah to set up a committee to specifically look into cases of sexual harassment, especially those involving female actors in the industry. Kishore further stated that sexual abuse occurs in every industry and is not just limited to showbiz.

In a recent conversation with India Today, Kishore said, “It (sexual exploitation) is everywhere, not just in Sandalwood or Tollywood Industries. It is in every field and not just in cinema. People in powerful positions try to exploit others. And what happened to those who came out during the #MeToo movement? They were sidelined. Even now, this can happen, so let the government do something about it.”

He further said that there has been a change in the industry in the last few years with more educated people coming into the film industry and he hopes that there will be a bigger change in cinema. “There should be a fundamental change,” Kishore added. Moreover, the Film Industry for Rights and Equality Association has demanded that the government constitute a committee headed by a retired judge to analyse the situation in the Kannada film industry.

Besides Kishore, popular actress Pranita Subhash also openly discussed her views on the ongoing fiasco surrounding the Hema committee report with India Today.

She said that it is an important step to have a commission which can maintain the anonymity of the victims and at the same time provide them justice. The actress also gave her strong support and praised the way the entire industry came together to support the cause.
