Why You Can’t Buy Mafia Souvenirs in Agrigento, Italy Anymore

Sicily, located in southern Italy, is one of the most beautiful Italian islands. With unforgettable beaches and an array of historical sites and attractions to explore, it’s no wonder it’s considered one of the best honeymoon destinations in all of Italy. Unfortunately, Sicily is also synonymous with organized crime, specifically the Sicilian Mafia, which was founded in the 1800s. However, one well-known tourist destination, Agrigento (pictured), is taking a step back when it comes to this notorious reputation. In August 2024, the city’s mayor, Francesco Miccichè, announced that he would be banning mafia-related souvenirs.

Miccichè explained the measure as follows via Euronews: “Since the sale of such products in the territory of Agrigento humiliates the local community, which has been committed for years to spreading a culture of legality, I am issuing a ban on the sale of any type of object that praises the mafia and organised crime or refers to the mafia and organised crime in any way and in any form.”

Although this may seem an extreme approach, the Sicilian Mafia is still omnipresent and present in Agrigento. In late 2023 and July 2024, several people with links to the Sicilian Mafia were arrested in the Agrigento area. Of course, there is much more to Agrigento than just its association with organized crime.

Agrigento, Italy has been named the Italian Capital of Culture for 2025

There’s a reason Agrigento, Italy stands out from other Sicilian destinations. The city is home to the Valley of the Temples, or Valle dei Templi. The ancient UNESCO World Heritage site features several structures dedicated to Greek gods and goddesses like Zeus, Concordia, and more. In fact, the Temple of Concordia (pictured) is a particular favorite among Tripadvisor reviewers, who note how well-preserved it is. Additionally, visitors will also find the Kolymbethra Garden (Giardino della Kolymbethra), which dates back to the 6th century, in the Valley of the Temples.

With all that said, in 2023 it was announced that Agrigento would be the Italian Capital of Culture for 2025. What exactly does this mean? The country is investing in highlighting Agrigento through various events and more. The annual program lasts for a year and according to Italy Magazine, Agrigento won this distinction because of the theme of their application titled “The Self, the Other and Nature: Relationships and Cultural Transformations.”

All this to say that it is no coincidence that the city’s mayor, Francesco Miccichè, decided to abolish mafia souvenirs. Simply put, tourists will have to resort to buying other, less shady souvenirs. If local shops decide to ignore this new rule, a fine will be issued.
