According to authorities, a federal grand jury returned an indictment against Strobl on August 16, 2023, charging him with the following:

  • attempted sexual exploitation of a child
  • attempted transfer of obscene material to a minor
  • the commission of a sex offense by a person who must register as a sex offender
  • distribution and attempted distribution of child pornography.

According to public records, Strobl initiated and maintained contact via a social media app with a Homeland Security Investigations agent who was undercover impersonating an underage female beginning in March 2023. In those communications, Strobl repeatedly attempted to have sex with the fictional minor. According to prosecutors, Strobl sent the agent more than 1,000 child pornography files. Documents also show that during the same time period, Strobl attempted to obtain explicit photos of another minor via another social media app from his cell phone, U.S. Attorney Troester said.

On December 4, 2023, Strobl pleaded guilty to Count 4 of the indictment and admitted to distributing child pornography via his cell phone.
