A male high school student who created a deepfake and sold it via Telegram has been arrested by police.

On December 5, Ansan Sangnok Police Station in Gyeonggi Province arrested a high school student in Daegu and Gyeongbuk for producing and distributing sexual exploitation of children and adolescents under the Juvenile Protection Act and violating the Sexual Violence Punishment Act.

Mr. A is accused of producing and distributing illegal sexual exploitation by selling deepfake images of sexual exploitation for 1,000 to 2,000 won each via Telegram to those who contacted him after he posted an advertisement on a social networking service (SNS) on June 7.

In this way, it was determined that A had collected 300,000 to 400,000 won by selling sexual exploitation more than 10 times.

The police discovered A’s message while monitoring SNS, posed as a buyer and arrested A in July.

The police searched A’s house, digitally seized his mobile phone and found 317 copies of deepfake versions of sexual exploitation. These were confiscated.

A total of 11 victims, including 10 students and a teacher, were identified as acquaintances from A’s high school days.

In some cases, buyers sent photos of their acquaintances to demand the production of sexual exploitation. This is expected to increase the number of victims.

The victims were unaware of the damage until police investigated, but they were reportedly shocked and frightened when they heard.

Police are also investigating a person who bought deepfake sexual exploitation from A. The investigation into the other buyers is ongoing.

Mr A is said to have stated during a police investigation: “I committed the crime by learning how to create deepfakes online to make easy money.”

Police plan to apply for a provisional arrest warrant for A soon.
