The marine industry will bring economic development and employment to Yucatán

The new Dispensa shipyard for the maintenance and repair of vessels and naval artifacts in the deepwater port of Progreso not only opens the door to Yucatán for the maritime industry, but also for new sectors that offer the state an opportunity to attract more investment, supply chains and, as a result, economic development and the creation of better-paying jobs, according to representatives of the private initiative.

This new project is considered the third of its kind in Mexico. It can serve up to 6 vessels simultaneously, and serves the Gulf of Mexico, the East Coast of the United States and the Caribbean. The project is strategically located and offers privileged access to important trade routes connecting North and Central America.

The president of the Business Coordinating Council (CCE), Alejandro Gómory Martínez, stressed that this shipyard offers the state the opportunity to attract new industries that we need today.

“This type of industry is closely related to the manufacturing industry, which we are in because the skills needed for other things are being developed. The latter puts us in the spotlight, especially what we were looking for on the East Coast of the United States, because it is the closest to us and this, together with the expansion of the port, already puts us in more favorable conditions,” stressed the also president of the National Chamber of the Processing Industry (Canacintra).

These works consist of a 150 linear meter dock and a 1,100 square meter workshop, offices and spaces that allow for efficient on-board repairs.

It has six positions for receiving ships up to 120 metres long and up to 4,500 tonnes, a slipway, a lifting truck, a transhipment pit, offices and workshops, and a 310-metre-long dock. This means we are ideally positioned to meet the most diverse needs in the maritime sector.

The president of the National Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism of Mérida (Canaco-Servitur), Levy Abraham Macari, indicated that this project contributes to the industrialization of the state and that it is also of great benefit to the people of Progreso, since they will most likely need specialized labor.

“It is a new investment for Yucatán, it will focus on the maintenance of large ships and boats and that will always be positive for the state, because in the end it is something that will generate investments and economic benefits,” he stressed.
