New drama from EastEnders stars gets release date

EastEnders stars Jo Joyner and Tamzin Outhwaite’s new drama The Wives has been given a release date

Channel 5 has confirmed that The Wives will premiere on Monday September 16, at 9pm, with new episodes every night until Wednesday 18 September (via Radio Times).

Joyner and Outhwaite star in the mystery series, alongside Waterloo Road and Coronation Street legend Angela Griffin and Beyond Paradise’s Jamie Bamber.

Griffin, Joyner and Outhwaite play the sisters-in-law who go on an annual holiday to Malta after their sister-in-law Annabelle (Christine Bottomley) dies in an apparent accident.

When Annabelle’s husband (Bamber) begins a relationship with a woman (Katie Clarkson-Hill) who may be her doppelganger, the trio begin to suspect there is more to their sister-in-law’s death than meets the eye.

As the women try to unravel this possible conspiracy, they encounter “corrupt officials, drug cartels and career criminals who are closer to home than ever imagined.”

Supporting roles are played by Ben Willbond (Ghosts), Jonathan Forbes (Catastrophe) and former Holby City star Ajay Chhabra.

Channel 5 announced in March that The Wives was going into production, with Griffin promising that the show would be full of “warmth, female friendship, humour and a big whodunnit story at its heart”.

“I’m thrilled to be playing Sylvie alongside the rest of this brilliant cast,” Outhwaite added. “The Wives will be filled with plenty of drama and even more of Malta’s beautiful scenery. I can’t wait for Channel 5 audiences to be swept away in the adventure.”

Joyner said in a statement: “I am so pleased to be working with Gaumont and once again in Malta on The Wives, a suspenseful thriller with a female lead.

“I have come to love Malta and its warm and welcoming people so much, coupled with working with this wonderful cast, not least Angela Griffin and Tamzin Outhwaite, this is going to be a fantastic play. I can’t wait to get started.”

The women premieres on Monday 16th September at 9pm on Channel 5.
