India fuels global manhunt with record number of Interpol red notices in 2023

Interpol has issued 100 Red Notices in 2023 at the request of India, the highest number in a single year, CBI Director Praveen Sood said. The announcement was made at the 10th Interpol Liaison Officers (ILOs) Conference, organised by the CBI, where Sood also noted that 29 fugitives have been brought back to India in 2023, and 19 so far in 2024.

The CBI’s Global Operation Centre processed 17,368 international requests for assistance last year, a testament to its robust functioning. Home Minister Govind Mohan praised the centre for diligently handling 200-300 requests daily, both incoming and outgoing.

Sood stressed the crucial role of international cooperation in combating crimes such as terrorism, cybercrime and drug trafficking. He stressed the importance of law enforcement professionals well-versed in international coordination of assistance. Sessions during the conference focused on extradition, provisional arrest and leveraging INTERPOL channels for transnational criminal investigations.
