NICB Partners with U.S. Customs and Border Protection to Stop Export of Stolen Vehicles

Attacks occurred in New York, New Ark, Baltimore, Norfolk, Savannah And Miami

OAK BROOK, Illinois., September 5, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Rising trends in auto theft pose complex challenges for law enforcement and insurance companies. The problem of stolen vehicles that are the United States is a particularly complex problem with important implications for law enforcement, public safety and international relations. However, the sheer volume of goods moving in and out of the country poses a challenge for authorities to identify stolen vehicles among legitimate exports. To address this problem, the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), the country’s leading non-profit organization, has dedicated itself to identifying, investigating, preventing and deterring insurance companies. fraud and crime, is working with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) as part of “Operation Terminus,” to prevent stolen vehicles from being smuggled out of the country through seaports across the country.

Organized crime syndicates often orchestrate the theft and export of vehicles, using sophisticated tactics to evade detection. These criminal networks may alter vehicle identification numbers (VINs), forge documents, or use other methods to disguise the true origin of stolen vehicles, making it difficult for law enforcement to trace and recover them. NICB has disrupted nearly 2,000 organized crime networks and recovered more than 300,000 vehicles worth hundreds of millions of dollars in the past year.

Over the past year, NICB agents, working with CBP officials as part of “Operation Terminus,” inspected shipping containers and discovered multiple luxury vehicles worth more than $100,000. $100,000 each, resulting in the seizure of multiple vehicles worth millions of dollars. These seizures occurred at Seaports of New York, New Ark, Norfolk, Baltimore south to Savannah and Miami Ports of Entry. Many of the recovered stolen vehicles were destined for various countries in AfricaIn addition, hundreds of rounds of ammunition of various calibers were also found during the operations, hidden in vehicles intended for Nigeria and other African ports.
