The U.S. premiere of Karaganda: Red Mafiya will take place at the Village East Angelika Cinema (181-189 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10003) at 4:30 PM on September 22, 2024, as part of the 15th annual Soho International Film Festival.

The film stars Konstantin Lavysh (Power Book IV: Force) as Vladimir, Nikita Bogolyubov (Barry) as Aleksei, Dimiter D. Marinov (Green Book) as Vanya, Natasha Blasick (Paul T. Goldman) as Elena, Richie Stephens (Mayor of Kingston) as Lyosha, and Alexander Karavay (Unusual Suspects) as Monya.

“Set in the dark underworld of the Vory v Zakonye (Thieves-in-Law), an elite criminal organization with roots dating back to Tsarist Russia, the film follows Vladimir, a Russian gangster in the 1990s,” the synopsis reads. “After a brutal shootout at a Russian air base, he finds himself embroiled in a deadly mafia war that forces him to confront an old friend from their time in Soviet prison camps. This encounter sets him on a harrowing journey to rescue his wife from the brutal Soviet prison system.

Weissberg previously narrated part of Karaganda: Red Mafiya’s from a nonfiction perspective in the 2008 documentary Hotel Gramercy Park. It was also inspired by Weissberg’s 2014 short film Karaganda, which won five awards at 26 festivals.

“I’m thrilled to finally share this film with audiences after more than a decade of work,” Weissberg said. “With the current global situation, Karaganda: Red Mafiya has taken on a new relevance, making its U.S. premiere at the Soho Film Festival even more meaningful.”

Weissberg is producing the film alongside Nina Gortinski and Edwin Mejia Jr., with Sameer Dua, Bryce Campbell and Ego Mikitas serving as executive producers and George Hume and Gregory Oelke serving as co-producers.
