Airbnb is taking new measures to combat sexual exploitation of children and adolescents in Medellin, Colombia. The online rental platform announced that it will implement three new measures aimed at combating this crime and addressing human trafficking, another persistent problem in Medellin.

Airbnb confirmed that the platform’s contribution will focus on three main areas: strengthening cooperation with law enforcement, enforcing policies for users, and improving the overall security of the platform.

According to the platform, they developed these measures in collaboration with the office of the mayor of Medellin, which has prioritized this issue under the current government. The problem of sexual exploitation has prompted authorities to tighten regulations and requirements for tourist establishments, including hotels and short-stay rentals.

The government has already taken measures, such as tightening sanctions for sexual exploiters and increasing police patrols to rescue underage victims.

The platform has announced that it has developed a series of training sessions with members of the Metropolitan Police on its communications portal with local authorities. The initiative is aimed at establishing a direct and secure channel for sending legal and valid information requests to Airbnb.

“The goal is to provide authorities with a secure and direct line to the platform when investigating potential cases,” explains Daniela Guzman, Manager of Global Alliances for Trust and Safety at Airbnb.

In addition, starting in November, Airbnb will require all users who book a listing to confirm that they understand the platform’s policies, which state that using the listings for sex work is strictly prohibited.

Travelers must accept this policy to complete their booking. By understanding this policy, guests understand that Airbnb will support criminal investigations related to sexual exploitation and human trafficking at the property. Additionally, violations of this policy will result in account deactivation.

“These measures against human trafficking and sexual exploitation of children and adolescents represent an important achievement of our partnership with Airbnb and our administration. We remain committed to promoting responsible tourism, which strengthens Medellín’s reputation as Colombia’s leading destination with a positive economic impact. This is a joint effort of Colombian society,” concluded Medellín Mayor Federico Gutierrez.
