Sydney man accused of possessing 500 hours of child abuse material

NSW Police have charged a 20-year-old Sydney man over alleged possession of a terabyte of child abuse material.
Police arrested the man at a house in Epping in The North of Sydney yesterday and executed a search warrant on the premises.

Police reportedly found a terabyte of pornographic material on the man’s phone, most of which was child abuse material.

The 20-year-old was taken to Gladesville police station and charged with two counts of using a carriage service to access child pornography.

“I want the public to understand how much child abuse material detectives find during these investigations,” said Detective Chief Inspector Jayne Doherty, Commander of the Sexual Offences Squad.

“One terabyte of data is equivalent to 250,000 photos or 500 hours of HD video,” she said.

“These are images of children, some of the most vulnerable people in our community, being sexually abused.

“My investigators will continue to diligently search these images to identify and rescue the children in the photos and videos and stop the abuse.

“Since last National Child Protection Week, the State Crime Command’s Child Exploitation Unit Victim Identification Team has identified 17 children who have been sexually abused to produce child abuse material.”

The man was denied bail by police and appeared in Burwood District Court yesterday.
