65 convictions pronounced (64 reduced sentences) and 18 acquittals. THE PUNISHMENT

It arrived late in the evening verdict in the Maxi Nebrodi appeal trial on the pasture mafia, or rather the Tortorician clans of the Batanesi and the Bontempo Scavowho have been organising agricultural fraud against the European Union and Agea for decades, siphoning off millions of euros in public money. The second-degree criminal section, chaired by Judge Francesco Tripodi and also composed of colleagues Antonino Giacobello and Daria Orlando, had withdrawn to the council chamber at around 9:30. The figures speak of 65 convictions, with only one full confirmation of the first degree for Gino Calcò Labruzzo, and 64 sentence reductions, 18 acquittals in total and 6 prescriptions in total. For 6 other suspects, the prosecutor’s appeal was rejected, so the acquittals of the first degree were confirmed. The appeal judges said no, as had happened in the first degree, to the “mafia” character of the Faranda group considered by the DDA to be closely related to the Bontempo Scavos, which was instead one of the key points of the prosecutor’s appeal, thus confirming the existence of the “simple” association.

The highest sentence was imposed on Sebastiano Bontempo (born in 1972), with 20 years and 6 months, while Salvatore Aurelio Faranda went from 30 years in the first degree to 20 years in the higher sentence..

In April, on the last day of the trial, the Deputy Prosecutor General Giuseppe Lombardo and, on appeal, the Deputy Prosecutors of the Anti-Mafia District Fabrizio Monaco and Antonio Carchietti, had split their indictment into several parts. And they had urged the professional judges to substantially confirm the sentence of the first instance, adding the recognition of the mafia association related to the Faranda group, considered by the DDA as closely related to the Bontempo Scavo, a group initially judged instead as a “simple” criminal association. And then they had requested some acquittals. Then, between July and August, the speeches of the almost one hundred lawyers involved in the defense were recorded.
