Ghana defeated by Japan at FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup

Ghana’s Black Princesses suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Japan in their second Group E match at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia, putting their hopes of advancing further in the tournament in jeopardy.

After losing their opening match 2-1 to Austria, the team were desperate to win, but Japan proved too strong, scoring twice in each half to hand Ghana their second straight defeat.

The Black Princesses started the match determinedly and held their ground for the first 40 minutes.

Japan broke the deadlock just before half-time when Sasai found the net in the 45th minute.

Moments later, Matsukubo took advantage of a mistake by Ghanaian goalkeeper Afi Amenyeku to double Japan’s lead in injury time.

In a bid to change the dynamics of the match, Ghana brought on Mafia Nyame and Mercy Attobra for Wasiima Mohammed and Mary Amponsah in the second half, but these changes did little to alter the momentum.

Japan extended their lead when Bayana scored from a scrimmage near the goal. Ghana secured another point in the 83rd minute when Stella Nyamekye converted a penalty after being fouled in the penalty area.

However, Japan responded quickly and Matsunaga scored a fourth goal to give the team a convincing 4-1 victory.

The result leaves Ghana at the bottom of Group E, with zero points after two matches.

The Black Princesses will play their final group match against New Zealand on Sunday 8 September 2024 at the Pascual Guerrero Stadium in Cali, needing a win to regain pride in their season.
