Call for arms embargo and justice for Gaza

The Southern Illinois Peace Coalition is hosting two major events to call for an immediate arms embargo on Israel in response to escalating violence and human rights violations in Gaza and the West Bank.

The first event is the monthly Peace and Justice Vigil, which takes place at the corner of Main and Illinois Avenues in Carbondale.

The second event is a demonstration for peace in Gaza in the pavilion.

Both events are intended to raise awareness of the need for the US to stop providing military aid to Israel, as mandated by the Foreign Assistance Act and the Leahy Law. These laws prohibit the transfer of weapons to countries that commit gross human rights violations.

Since October 7, the US has sent more than 50,000 tons of military equipment to Israel, an average of two arms shipments per day. Activists are urging the government to listen to the growing movement demanding an end to these shipments.

In addition to Gaza concerns, the issue of arms smuggling to criminal gangs in Haiti will also be highlighted, highlighting weak US gun laws that are exacerbating violence in the region.

The Peace Coalition Vigil will take place on Saturday, September 7, 2024 from 12:00 to 13:00 and the Rally for Peace on Sunday, September 8, 2024 from 14:00 to 15:00. The next Zoom meeting is scheduled for September 18, 2024 at 18:00.
