Threat Investigator, Youth Safety Team at Meta – Menlo Park, CA | Washington, DC

The Integrity, Investigations, Intelligence and Events (i3E) teams at Meta are dedicated to protecting the users of our family of applications (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus) from a multitude of threats including: criminal organizations, human trafficking and exploitation, and scams/fraud. We are looking for a Security Analyst – Threat Investigator to investigate advanced threat actors, enhance investigation methods, automate and mature team processes through tooling, and use innovative approaches to protect people from offline harm. You will have the opportunity to work on some of the most challenging, complicated, and highly visible risks the business faces.

We are seeking an experienced Security Analyst to advance our understanding and mitigation of child sexual abuse and exploitation on our family of apps. In addition to investigating complex threats, the ideal candidate will have an eye for improving investigative methods and utilizing innovative investigative approaches to prevent harm to children on our platforms. The ideal candidate will be an innovative self-starter, motivated by our mission and results-driven, capable of extracting, assimilating, and correlating a wide range of data to expose, analyze, and disrupt threat actors across multiple spaces. Successful candidates must be comfortable with a variety of technical investigative skills; proficiency in SQL is preferred. Threat Researcher, Youth Safety Team Responsibilities

  • Investigate complex child sexual exploitation operations to understand how abuse manifests across Meta’s platforms and the broader information ecosystem
  • Lead a portfolio of investigative research including identifying abuse trends, understanding hostile behavior, and designing forward-looking enforcement strategies to mitigate harm
  • Proactively hunt for threats and stealth abuse by leveraging internal data sets, open source information, and private third-party information
  • Analyze qualitative and quantitative data to advance research, quantify trends, and support findings with clear, concise evidence
  • Apply analytical rigor to research, analysis and programs as you seek strategic improvement opportunities
  • This feature may expose you to graphic and/or offensive content, including but not limited to graphic images, videos and text, offensive or derogatory language and other potentially offensive material such as child exploitation, graphic violence, self-harm, animal cruelty and other content that may be considered offensive or disturbing.

Minimum qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience conducting security investigations in government, intelligence, cybersecurity, journalism, and/or private sector organizations
  • Professional expertise or previous work experience in child safety law or policy (e.g. intelligence, law enforcement, legal analysis or NGO)
  • Experience with open source research techniques and familiarity with various internet research tools
  • Experience leveraging SQL, OSINT and network security concepts in a research context
  • Skilled in developing multi-source, evidence-based findings and communicating these to diverse audiences
  • Proficient in SQL

Desired qualifications

  • Experience in performing large-scale data analysis and using big data tools such as Jupyter Notebook, Maltego, Palantir, etc.
  • Experience working on high impact threats within a tight timeline
  • Experience working on or managing projects that impact the entire enterprise and/or stakeholders across multiple organizations and functions
  • Experience working with a team that spans multiple locations/time zones
  • MS or equivalent experience in computer science, information systems, intelligence studies, cybersecurity, or a related field
