Why AMLO’s Mexican judicial overhaul is worrying investors

Outgoing Chairman Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador is once again shaking up Mexico’s political landscape as the country moves closer to implementing a controversial reform that would dramatically change the country’s judiciary.

Foreign governments, a weakened opposition party and local and international companies operating in Mexico have spoken out against the proposed reform, warning of threats to democracy and even drug cartels infiltrating the courts. The Mexican peso remains one of the worst-performing currencies this year, partly because of Morena’s landslide victory and the proposed judicial overhaul.
