Australian National Review – Laval allows professor to return after serving sentence for child pornography

François Mathieu-Potvin, a professor at the University of Laval’s mechanical engineering department, has caused outrage when he returns to the classroom after serving a 12-month prison sentence for child pornography.

Mathieu-Potvin was convicted in February 2023 and pleaded guilty to possessing more than 60 explicit files involving girls aged 5 to 12. The disturbing nature of the case was highlighted by prosecutor Laura Plamondon-Dufour, who detailed the exploitation of young girls in the materials.

As Le Journal de Quebec reported, students and parents are furious about his return, calling it unacceptable. A father of a student told local media: “The university should not force students to be around him.”

This sentiment is shared by many students, with one student expressing discomfort attending classes taught by the professor. “It’s not an environment conducive to learning. I can’t interact with him after what he did,” one student shared.

In a post on Laval University’s “Spotted” Facebook page, a student revealed her trauma from past sexual abuse, saying she feels unable to sit in a class with the professor any longer.

Despite the negative reactions, the university says it is bound by contractual obligations and legal responsibilities and encourages affected students to seek help from campus services.
