CLARKSBURG, West Virginia. — A federal judge has added 25 years to the prison sentence of a former mob hitman in connection with the 2018 beating death at Hazelton Prison of notorious mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger.

Federal inmate Fotios “Freddy” Geas was sentenced Friday in federal court in Clarksburg after pleading guilty to manslaughter and assault causing serious bodily injury in connection with the 2018 death of Bulger.

Prosecutors said Geas used a lock attached to a belt to beat Bulger to death less than 12 hours after arriving at the federal prison in Preston County.

Geas, 57, was serving a life sentence for previous violent crimes.

Bulger was a Boston mob boss in the 1970s and 1980s and also served as an FBI informant, providing authorities with information about the organization’s rival gang.
