Haiti: Bandits chase police in crackdown on gangs

On Friday, bandits in Haiti shot at police officers and soldiers outside of work hours in response to the officers’ offensive against gangs.

A statement from the Haitian National Police said that officer Wisly Villefranche, of the Port-au-Prince Intervention Brigade, was killed by criminals on Magloire Ambroise Street.

According to media reports, this attack is a response by criminal gangs to actions against banditry in neighborhoods such as Bel-Air, Solino and Bas Delmas.

Meanwhile, the investigation continues into the death of 32-year-old Haitian Armed Forces soldier Roody Octavius, who was shot dead by gunmen in Vivy Mitchel, Pétion-Ville, in the capital.

According to the online newspaper Haiti Libre, Octavius ​​was unable to respond to the surprise attack and his attackers took his body with them.

An investigation is also underway into the death of Michelle Nathalnielle Megine, a Haitian National Police officer on August 28.

So far, her colleagues have only arrested her sister and brother-in-law, who are believed to be responsible for Megine’s murder.

The officer was a 28th promotion officer and was en route to her patrol area here in Port-au-Prince, but the bandits intercepted her vehicle and opened fire before giving her time to react.

According to the National Union of Haitian Police Officers – cited by the daily Le Facteur Haiti – as many as 13 bullet holes were found in her car.
