LEONARDTOWN, Maryland. – District Attorney Jaymi Sterling announced today that Sean Patrick Kraese, 24, of Piney Point, Maryland, has been convicted of multiple charges of animal cruelty and possession of obscene material in connection with performing sex acts on his dog.

In June 2022, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office received complaints from neighbors about numerous dead animals, funeral pyres, and bone piles on Kraese’s property that were emitting an offensive odor. Detectives executed a search warrant on Kraese’s residence, seized his cell phone, and discovered numerous dead small animals and bones on his property. After reviewing his phone, detectives learned that Kraese had been making videos depicting himself performing perverted acts on his dog. Kraese’s online activity revealed that he was openly participating in the “zoophilia” community by distributing these lewd videos to others and offering recipients of the videos the opportunity to perform similar acts on his dog.

“The defendant’s actions were not only disturbing, but a profound betrayal of the trust and responsibility we have for animals. The exploitation and abuse of animals for sexual gratification reflects a profound moral failure and an utter disregard for the dignity of all living beings,” said District Attorney Jaymi Sterling. “By holding the defendant accountable for his depraved behavior, we reinforce our commitment to protecting those who cannot speak for themselves.”

On August 20, 2024, after a trial, Kraese was convicted of distributing obscene material, possessing obscene material with intent to distribute, and two counts of aggravated animal cruelty. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for October 1, 2024, at which Kraese faces a maximum sentence of seven years in prison.

Sergeant Keith Moritz of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office was the lead investigator.

Senior Assistant District Attorney Sarah Proctor and Assistant District Attorney Zachary Varda prosecuted the case on behalf of the citizens of St. Mary’s County.

The Honorable Joseph M. Stanalonis presided over the case.
